I’m presenting my Following the Winchell Expedition trip live online at virtual Canoecopia on Sunday, March 13 at 10:30am CDT. This is a presentation about the trip I took last year where I followed a canoe route in northern Minnesota from 1879. I’ll talk about how I figured out the route and tell a few stories and pictures from the trip.

This is the presentation description:

In 1879, Minnesota State Geologist Newton Horace Winchell surveyed the Arrowhead region of Minnesota. Once on the north shore of Lake Superior, he left Grand Marais to travel inland through what is now the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. His route followed the historic Iron Trail, to the Voyager Route and then descended back to Lake Superior via an Ojibwe canoe route on the Poplar River. In this presentation, professional landscape photographer Bryan Hansel will speak about how he recreated the route using a combination of existing infrastructure and bushwhacks. The solo canoe trip took Hansel approximately two weeks. It was 160 miles and included about 30 miles of portages.

Last June, I wrote a number of articles about the gear I used on the trip. You can find those articles in the archives.

I’ll be answering questions after I do the presentation.

This is my InReach track from the trip.

    Hi Bryan,

I was disappointed last night when I logged on to Whova to watch the recording of your presentation that it was not available. Is this an oversight or was it live only?

    Thanks,

My understanding is that they will upload it later in the week, but I was only a speaker and not part of the show. Rutabaga/Canoecopia be able to answer questions better than I can. I’d assume that they are overwhelmed trying to reassemble their store right now.

This is Canoecopia’s statement on the Whova app, “In case you missed it, this live presentation was recorded and will be uploaded to Whova this coming week.”
