The Boundary Waters was recognized for recreational opportunities in 1926, named the Superior Roadless Area in 1938, the BWCA in 1958, and federally designated under The Wilderness Act in 1964. It wasn't until October 21, 1978, The Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Act was established to provide specific guidance for managing the million plus acres of the Superior National Forest.

The BWCAW has changed little since the glaciers melted. With over 1,500 miles of canoe routes, nearly 2,200 designated campsites, and more than 1,000 lakes and streams waiting, the BWCAW draws over 250,000 visitors each year. As part of the Superior National Forest, the BWCAW is managed by the US Forest Service.

The two maps cover the entire map region with clearly marked hiking trails, portages, cross-country, snowmobile and snowshoe trails, trail access locations, campgrounds and tent sites, birding, fishing, kayak, canoeing and power boating opportunities. Some of the features found on these maps are: Ash River, Crane Lake, Kabetogama and Rainy Lake Visitor Centers, Gull Island Rookery, Grassy Bay Cliffs, Anderson Bay, Kettle Falls, Hoist Bay, and Gold Portage.

The Boundary Waters Map Pack includes:

  • Map 752 :: Boundary Waters East [Canoe Area Wilderness, Superior National Forest]
  • Map 753 :: Boundary Waters West [Canoe Area Wilderness, Superior National Forest]

Every Trails Illustrated map is printed on "Backcountry Tough" waterproof, tear-resistant paper. A full UTM grid is printed on the map to aid with GPS navigation.

  • Map Scale = 1:70,000
  • Sheet Size = 37.75" x 25.5"
  • Folded Size = 4.25" x 9.25"

Good quality. I am using mine for educational purposes so I will have to order another set to get them on the wall all aligned for mental mapping routes.

It’s the perfect planning map, durable and accurate. I personally used it for navigation during day trips, but my routes were fairly simple navigation-wise. For overnight trips that involve lots of bays, islands, or other navigational trickery, you should get a more detailed map of your chosen route once you use this one to plan. It’s a good backup map if you change your route and your detailed map doesn’t cover your new plan.

Gear shopping for a BW trip is complicated. What you'd LIKE to do is just buy the best of everything, that's gonna get deep into your pocket money. Buy the cheapest things you can find, at best you're asking for a ruined wilderness experience, maybe even risking your life and the lives of others. You have to be smart about it. These maps aren't the BEST you can buy, but the entire BWCA in Fischer or McKenzie is gonna be about 30 maps at 8 bucks apiece. USGS maps, you'll need 5 to 7 maps for a 7 day loop. These NG maps are more than adequate in detail, they're durable, and if you half-ass take care of them they'll last for generations. OK, I haven't owned mine for generations, but I believe that. Anyway, what I usually do is copy the area where I'm going and blow it up 25%, I take the NG maps with me but they rarely come out of the pouch, but I digress. 15 bucks for a useful, reliable map of the whole BWCA is about as good as it gets.

These maps are great. They are losing a star because the Canadian portion is shown in very faded print. This makes navigation of the border lakes difficult. The scale is very convenient and having the entire BWCA on two maps is great.

Not super detailed, o would rely solely on these maps to navigate the boundary waters, but they are great for planning your route, & also for cross checking the portage’s, as we should all know there’s bound to be mistakes on the maps from time to time. The quality is great, & they seem pretty accurate, but when you’re in a canoe on a big lake with lots of islands and you’re trying to navigate to a specific portage when there are several on that lake, you really need a more detailed, scaled down map to guide you. Like I said, this map is great for swing the bigger picture when planning your route, but do not listen to any of the others about using this map alone for navigation. I’ve been doing boundary waters trips for 26 years and getting lost is not something I’d want for anyone!

This is a very nice, detailed map leaving nothing to be desired. I bought the pack because I am a trip leader and I have a trip to the Boundary Waters coming up in a month. These maps cover the area with every detail you could imagine or desire. The icing on the cake? The maps are waterproof, crease proof and tear proof, and without being made of an obnoxiously unmanageable material. These things will literally last me years. An incredibly wise investment and something that I am sure I will turn to time and time again.

Trails Illustrated are a great map series. If you have any of their maps, you know what I'm talking about.

These maps are great for getting an overall view of the B.W.C.A., although I would recommend also getting more detailed maps that show underwater topography if you are going fishing or going deep into the bush. Since the scale is so big, you don't get the fine details of coves that could put you in a pickle if you get disoriented.

But I like having a "big picture" map of the area as it helps me understand the more detailed maps better.

    Great price also.
